The multidisciplinary panel will address the emerging FGM/C problem in the United States. Performing FGM/C on girls under the age of 18 is illegal under federal law and under the laws of 25 states. It is also illegal to transport a girl from the United States to another country to undergo FGM/C. The increase in the number of immigrants and refugees from countries that practice FGM/C brings this issue to the forefront for professionals who provide services to these populations.
