Describes child-rearing practices of Jamaican immigrant families in the United States. The families attempt to maintain values and experiences from their country of origin and transfer these to their current child-rearing practices. Three main themes emerged from the exploration of child rearing process in this community: (1) the church community’s role, (2) historical factors of adult’s growing up experience, and (3) current child-rearing practice in the United States. These parents are fostering the skills and values their children need to develop and succeed. Awareness of issues affecting emerging populations will enable care providers in the United States to assist them in a more effective and sensitive way. (Description from source)
