The Health and Cognitive Growth of Latino Toddlers: At Risk or Immigrant Paradox?

This resource looks primarily at Mexican immigrant mothers and explores the causes and consequences of “the immigrant paradox,” i.e. the fact that Mexican and other Latino immigrant newborns display robust birth weight and low mortality compared to whites and African-Americans. The study finds that these early advantages do not persist over time. Instead, these children at 24 months of age display higher rates of obesity and asthma and lagging cognitive development.
