“38 middle-class immigrant Chinese mothers and 38 middle-class Caucasian American mothers of 3-8 year-olds completed the Parenting Dimensions Inventory and the Parenting Goals Questionnaire. Both groups of Ss had similar child-rearing goals. However, they differed in their parenting methods. Chinese Ss reported a higher degree of control over their children. They reported less nurturance, responsiveness, and consistency and were more restrictive with their children than were Caucasian Ss. Chinese and Caucasian American Ss placed more emphasis on manners, school-related skills, and emotional adjustment during the early elementary school years (aged 6-8 yrs of age) than during the preschool years (3-5 yrs of age). Immigrant Chinese Ss seemed to maintain ties to their culture of origin and to accommodate to the socialization practices of the host culture.
