The author, a Pulizer Prize-winning journalist, chronicles the real, life-threatening journey of a 17-year-old Honduran youth from his native country to North Carolina to reunite with his mother. The book is more than Enrique’s story though – it is the revelation of thousands of children and youth like him who have entered the U.S. alone from Central American countries and the perils they face on their journey, often on Mexico’s “Train of Death.” The author, Sonia Nazario, looks at the immigration policies of the United States, and examines perceptions of “benefits and burdens” of an immigrant population. A new young adult version of the book has been published, which is geared towards middle school students.
