This spotlight article features a wealth of statistics on African immigrants living in the United States. The article examines the population’s size, geographic distribution, socioeconomic characteristics, and admission categories. The spotlight also found that most African immigrants live in New York, California, Texas, Maryland, and Virginia and that about one-third of all refugees and asylees admitted to the U.S. in 2007 arrived from Africa. Service providers working with African refugee youth will find the demographics in this article helpful in painting a comprehensive portrait of this growing population in the United States.
