This report suggests complementary learning opportunities in addition to regular school so that disadvantaged children may also get a good education in the United States. The report noted that children learn the most when they are educated both within and outside the typical classroom setting. Examples of complementary learning opportunities are after-school programs or in-school out-of-school time, where the child’s education is coordinated between school and this new learning environment. Service providers working with refugee youth might look into the advantages that this type of learning may offer for their clients, especially in developing new programs.
