This tip sheet offers information and tools for early childhood educators and other service providers working with young children who speak more than one language. The tip sheet provides research and advice on language development, language mixing, developing relationships with the children, and it addresses concerns about the child losing their home language. Specifically, the tip sheet suggests that educators offer children opportunities to play, repeat new words and concepts, build on what the child already knows, and “double up” messages with gestures, actions and facial expressions.
