This study is a first step towards understanding the circumstances under which undocumented unaccompanied children leave their home country and make the arduous journey to the U.S. by themselves. It explores the strengths and protective factors that enable these children to leave their homes, survive the journey, and negotiate the system. This summary describes the first systematic examination of a sample of this little-known population from a child welfare and resilience perspective.
