This article was featured in an issue of the Journal of Family Psychology that addresses family processes and children???s psychological adjustment in the presence of trenchant sociocultural change, cultural conflict, family dislocation, and the need for readjustment to new social environments. Based upon the experiences of Sudanese youth, this article is a phenomenological study of refugees’ experiences living in American foster families after living in peer groups in refugee camps. This article is based upon interviews with 18 youth Sudanese adults 7 years after resettlement. The study found that nearly all of these youth struggled with parental authority at first and nearly half changed placements because of these difficulties.
