Provides online tools to administrators, teachers, and volunteers to self-assess literacy programs for children and adults in order to strengthen areas of excellence and identify needed improvements. The Verizon Literacy Program Self-Assessment Tool (VSP-SAT), developed by the National Center for Family Literacy funded by the Verizon Foundation, maintains components for literacy in early childhood, elementary school-age children, adolescents, and adults. Each component includes program-focused standards such as general assessment practices, parent involvement, program leadership, and professional development. Curriculum standards include: oral language, phonics/alphabetics or phonological awareness, print awareness, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and writing skills. Based on the responses, each standard is scored on a scale of 1-5, where implementation is nonexistent, minimal, moderate, full, or enhanced. At the end of each component, a matrix is available to design an Action Plan with items for each standard, responsible persons, resources needed, and targeted dates for implementation. (IP)
