Reports changes in the demographic profile of Mexican migrants to the United States. Five categories were evaluated: gender composition, settlement patterns, age composition, educational attainment, and urban-rural composition. A profile of more recent migrants is described as having the following characteristics: more likely to settle permanently in the U.S, a greater number of females, younger, better educated, coming from southern Mexico and Mexico City, and departing from urban areas. Factors that explain why Mexican migrants are settling permanently in the U.S. include: the economic crisis in Mexico, the changing nature of U.S. demands for labor, and social networks. Further research is necessary to determine if these population characteristics are consistent throughout the United States. (IP)
