“In February, 2000, a Seminar on Migrant Women and Children was held in San Salvador under the auspices of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM) . Subsequently, the Governments of Canada and Mexico agreed on the need for a follow up activity specifically on migrant children in the Region, and proposed a study which Vice Ministers of the RCM approved in 2001. Action Canada for Population and Development (ACPD), as the Canadian contractor, agreed to survey governments and NGOs on implementation of the recommendations of the seminar with regard to the human rights of migrant children, and with regard to health services and protection from abuse available to migrant children in the Region. Questionnaires were sent to the eleven member governments, of whom seven responded, and civil society organizations and individuals were contacted in eight of the countries. In the Mexican component of the study, Gustavo L??pez of the Colegio de Michoac??n undertook a field visit to interview migrant children, immigration authorities and staff from NGOs that assist those children. He also undertook to examine the statistical information available and propose a plan for obtaining information.” – Publisher’s description CONTENTS Executive Summary and Recommendations 1.
