Presents offerings of high-quality documentary films that chronicle the experiences and issues of immigrants to America. Films are divided into three sections. Section 1, Immigrant Integration: The Newcomer’s Perspective, presents eight films produced within the last three years, which reveal aspects of American life faced by immigrants. Examples include: navigating the healthcare system, developing political and economic power, being a teen immigrant, and Arab Americans facing changes in their lives after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Section 2, Journey to the Homeland, offers six films that document immigrants returning to their native countries of Vietnam, Guatemala, Cambodia, Mexico, and Nigeria. The themes of transnationalism and globalism are explored. Section 3, Profiles, offers four films that capture the painful experiences of a Cuban family navigating the immigration system; a study of immigrant day laborers; the challenges of a cosmopolitan Vietnamese teen who participates in a student exchange program in rural Mississippi; and an intimate portrait of the Asian American culture. This list of films is curated by Active Voice (AV) in partnership with Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR), and Grantmakers in Film and Electronic Media (GFEM).
