This case study illustrates the differences between US and Hmong cultures concerning the issue of rape. Whereas American institutions treated the victim as an individual, the Hmong refugees view the crime as a family and community issue. These distinct conceptions present a significant challenge for the victim as she tries to make sense of her identity in the midst of the conflicting input from her family as well as rape counsellors and legal authorities.
