“Fleeing from hostility, discrimination, and persecution in the Krasnodar Krai, a region in Russia, between 10,000 and 15,000 Meskhetian Turks are seeking refuge worldwide. Within that group, 5,000 Meskhetian Turkish refugees have registered for the United States’ resettlement program. On July 22, NSC welcomed two elderly couples – the very first Meskhetian refugees to arrive in the U.S. – to their new home in Philadelphia. An additional 3 families (13 people) arrived shortly thereafter. An estimated 84 Meskhetian Turks will take part in this first resettlement in Philadelphia. ‘It’s a huge honor that Philadelphia gets to welcome these people first,’ said NSC’s Social Services Director Juliane Ramic. ‘If the first resettlement is successful, several hundred more Meskhetian Turks will come to Philadelphia in the near future.’ ” – Publisher’s description
