Provides step-by-step guidance on developing a logic model for use in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Written primarily for directors of W.K. Kellogg Foundation-funded projects and new grantees, this handbook presents tools for linking program goals, processes, and short- and long-term outcomes. Project directors and staff get: (1) a basic introduction to the logic model as an action-oriented tool for program planning and evaluation, including discussion of the model’s role in positioning human services and education programs for success and how to use the model throughout the life of a program; (2) examples of ways to develop a simply program logic model as well as practical exercises that include checklists for reviewing content quality and documenting progress toward change and also a template for developing the basic logic model; (3) instructions on how to expand a basic logic model to explore the underlying assumptions of a given program so as to strengthen the initiative; and (4) practical exercises for applying basic logic modeling techniques to construction and implementation of program evaluations. Using the logic model, program directors and new grantees get an explicit understanding of challenges ahead, resources available, and timetables for achieving desired outcomes.
