Delineates the results of a World Hunger Year (WHY)/Americorps VISTA program to document the tenets of the LA’s BEST program which was selected as an outstanding example for replication in other communities focused on reducing hunger and poverty through self-reliance. The manual begins with an organizational profile that explores the history and growth of the program as well as the population served and statistical demographics for the city of Los Angeles. An extensive description and evaluation of the program includes: goals, operational plans, daily activities, field trips, community service, and parental/volunteer/community involvement. The personnel structure is considered as well as a detailed financial assessment, including payroll and insurance issues. The final section describes the replication process and how to duplicate LA’s BEST program. An appendix provides a variety of sample materials and worksheets for use when replicating the program.
