“East Side House Settlement (ESHS) serves a diverse population of students, many of whom are English Language Learners. By integrating bilingual and monolingual kindergarten students, ESHS promotes English language learning by the predominately Spanish-speaking students. Additionally, English-speaking students are exposed to Spanish. The integration of all students helps them to get to know each other and encourages cross-cultural understanding. … The P.S. 220 after-school program is managed by ESHS, a multi-service community-based organization established in 1891. ESHS has extensive experience in operating after-school programs. With an enrollment of approximately 175, East Side’s after-school program at P.S. 220 is open to children from kindergarten through grade eight. The program has a close relationship with the school. One reason for the strong connection is that the school offers its teachers opportunities to provide academic enrichment to students for one hour a day under the Extended Day system, and a number of the teachers have taken advantage of this opportunity by working in the after-school program.” – Publisher’s description
