Introduces important topics that every family child care provider needs to know in order to run a successful business. Child care providers get basic guidance on how to: (1) begin their business, including finding out about relevant child care regulations, understanding the benefits of being licensed, affiliating with the local family child care association, signing up with the local child care resource and referral agency, and joining the federal Child and Adult Care Food program; (2) create contracts and policies, including communicating and enforcing rules; (3) keep records, calculate taxes owed, and identify deductions for business expenses; (4) reduce the risks of running a business, including complying with local child care and zoning regulations, screening families before enrollment, following reasonable business practices, updating insurance to provide protection against major incidents, and taking reasonable steps to make the program accessible to children with disabilities; and (5) manage income and plan for retirement.
