MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership advocates for the expansion of mentoring nationwide by encouraging organizations to follow rigorous standards in order to ensure safety and quality, promoting pro-mentoring legislation and policies, and highlighting best practices through an annual awards program. MENTOR’s Web site offers new and existing coaches as well as those running or seeking to start up mentoring programs access to information on: (1) becoming a mentor and finding a mentor; (2) improving mentoring skills; (3) understanding the key components of a safe and effective mentoring program, including matching community needs with type of program, evaluating the program, and partnering with experts and community groups; and (4) providing mentoring for special-needs children, including foster children, and ensuring adequate protections for children being mentored.
