Contains data on and analysis of key measures of child well-being that reflect experiences from birth to early adulthood and offer meaningful comparisons across states and over time. The data book uses maps, charts, and tables to track the following 10 indicators: (1) low-birth-weight babies; (2) infant mortality rate; (3) child death rate; (4) teen deaths by accident, homicide, or suicide; (5) teen birth rate; (6) percentage of teen high school dropouts; (7) percentage of teens neither attending school nor working; (8) percentage of children living with parents not employed full-time; (9) percentage of children in poverty; and (10) percentage of families headed by a single parent. The on-line version of the data book allows users to search and manipulate data from Kids Count data books as well as from the 2000 Census and other sources. In addition, users can download summaries of state profiles; chart a single indicator over a period of time or compare the progress of up to 8 states; view Census 2000 data for any geographic area by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, living arrangement, and other demographic characteristics; and generate comparative rankings by state, county, city, metropolitan area, or New England town.
