Presents dual-language autobiographical accounts of Angolan refugees??? experiences for use by English teachers giving instruction in autobiographical writing, geography teachers conducting lessons about migration, teachers addressing such topics as human rights, multiculturalism, prejudice and discrimination, and citizenship, and English as a Second Language teachers, Angolan language teachers, and adult education tutors. The dual-language text provides: (1) an overview of Angolan refugees in Great Britain as well as information about Angolan society, ethnic groups, and educational system; (2) a summary of recent Angolan history, focusing on the civil war between rival political factions and horrendous human rights violations; and (3) individual accounts written by Angolan adolescents and adults in which refugees speak in their own voices about their prior life in Angola, their experiences in school and in business, the horror of violence in Angola and escape from the conflict, the difficulties of being a refugee, memories of Angola (including favorite recipes), adjustment to life in London, and hopes for the future. Also contains resources for teachers, including an activity leaflet, maps, a list of books, and useful addresses, as well as photographs and drawings.
