Discusses the values upheld by families from Vietnam living in the United States, with the goal of enriching relationships within families and the larger community. Compiled by the San Jose, California-based Family Values and Principles Development Committee, the bilingual booklet describes 20 family principles, as reflected in: (1) the spousal relationship, including expressions of mutual respect and support, making the relationship a top priority, sharing responsibilities in all aspects of life, encouraging each other to enhance personal values and character, and developing long-term financial plans for the family; (2) parental duties, including providing for children’s basic needs, being good role models, fostering a close and empathetic relationship with one’s children, establishing family structure in order to prevent bad influences, and promoting children’s character and education; (3) children’s responsibilities, including loving grandparents and elders, respecting parents, being considerate of siblings, being responsible and studious, and obeying the law and contributing to society; and (4) family activities, including enriching spiritual life and cultural traditions by honoring ancestors and speaking Vietnamese at home, maintaining harmony within the family, creating family time and organizing outings, strengthening ties with extended family and friends, and taking part in worthwhile community activities.
