Online Training Modules

BRYCS Online Training Modules are a convenient way for you to participate in valuable training that will assist you in serving refugee and immigrant children, youth, and their families. Trainings such as these often fit into your busy schedule and can eliminate travel expenses. Best of all, there is no cost to participate!

Discrimination & Bullying of Refugee Youth

Bullying and discrimination is on the rise and affects refugee youth and families in unique ways. This module will share statistics and stories on bullying and discrimination among diverse refugee youth. These stories will be contextualized within a wider discussion on psychological and sociological concerns that this population may experience. This module will provide best practices and recommendations for individuals, families, schools, and the wider community in meeting these challenges. This course is designed for use with teachers but is recommended for social workers, counselors, psychologists, and other human services and behavioral health professionals who seek knowledge about refugee youth and families. It is approporate for participants with all levels of knowledge about this topic. BRYCS would like to thank the Refugee Center Online (RCO) for its feedback and support in the development of this course.

Raising Children in a New Country 

This course was created for newcomer parents and the agencies that serve and support them. The course work aims to ensure that newcomer parents have the basic information they need about U.S. laws and parenting practices and is targeted to newcomer parents with low levels of English proficiency and/or low literacy levels. For best results, BRYCS recommends using this course in culturally appropriate parent support groups, preferably run by at least one experienced newcomer parent of the same ethnicity and one U.S.-born parent, where refugee and immigrant parents can ask questions, try out new behaviors, and find positive support to help ease their transition. This course is adapted from BRYCS’ Raising Children in a New Country: Illustrated Handbook. Also available in Somali!

Raising Young Children in a New Country: Supporting Early Learning and Healthy Development

This course was created for newcomer parents and the agencies that serve and support them. Raising Teens in a New Country: A Guide for the Whole Family

This course was created for parents and teens who are new to the U.S., and for the service providers working with them. The course work covers topics that often come up in families raising teenagers in the United States such as discipline, dating, driving, and cultural identity. It aims to remind newcomers that every parent worries for their children and most teens face these challenges. For best results, BRYCS recommends using this course in culturally appropriate parent support groups, preferably run by at least one experienced newcomer parent of the same ethnicity and one U.S.-born parent, where refugee and immigrant parents can ask questions, try out new behaviors, and find positive support to help ease their transition. This course is adapted from BRYCS’ Raising Teens in a New Country: A Guide the Whole Family.

Refugee and Immigrant Family and Community Engagement in the Schools

This module was created for schools and refugee services staff. It reviews the Parent-Teacher Association’s (PTA) six National Standards for Family-School Partnerships and provides recommendations on implementing each of the standards with refugee and immigrant students and their families.  Promising practices for each of the standards are discussed, and additional resources provided. *Note: This training works best in Internet Explorer.

Preventing Child Maltreatment in ORR/DCS-Funded Care Provider Programs

This module was created for individuals working within ORR/DCS residences. It covers professional ethics, boundaries, and conduct; what constitutes child maltreatment; how to respond to and report suspected child maltreatment; and ways to prevent abuse and neglect in residences and protect yourself against allegations. Pre and post-tests are included. Also available in Spanish.  *Note: This training works best in Internet Explorer. 

Refugee 101: With a Special Look at Child-Specific Issues 

What questions do you most commonly get in your workplace or community about refugees and resettlement? Do you feel well poised to answer these questions and advocate for newcomers? In today’s political climate, it is critical that we understand the refugee resettlement process, especially if working with this vulnerable population. This module aims to humanize the refugee experience and will cover some of the basics: what is a refugee and the push/pull factors of migration. Instructors discuss the pre-arrival process, including security measures, and post-arrival services. There is a special emphasis on child-specific issues.
