Refugee youths ages 15-24 are paired with a volunteer mentor from the community for a period of 6 months, during which time pairs work towards achieving the youth’s unique, individual goals which are identified at time of intake. These goals may include, but are not limited to:

  • Practicing English through conversation and companionship
  • School support for specific subjects
  • Becoming competitive for college while in high school
  • Learning how to budget, pay bills, manage personal finances
  • Learning more about Austin recreational opportunities
  • Learning more about American culture
  • Resume creation and job interviewing practice
  • Assistance searching for jobs and completing applications
  • Exploring career interests and options

We take aholistic approach when making pairs and match people based on a variety of factors such as language spoken, career interests, hobbies, educational needs, and personality.
